OWEN F. CARRIGAN
by Owen W. (Bill) Carrigan

Owen Frederick Carrigan, son of Owen & Minnie (Buce) Carrigan, left Minnesota when he was about 13 years old because of asthma. He moved to South Dakota where he worked for ranchers, cattle companies, etc. for approximately 11 years. Some of the time was spent on or near the Indian reservations. One of the large cattle companies he worked for was named the "Diamond A". This was also their cattle brand. It was owned by people in Scotland. Another outfit he worked for was called the Matador.

A broken leg that wasn't properly set caused him to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, to have it reset. He then stayed at his sister Nell's place at Brownton, Minnesota to recuperate. It was here that he met Cecil Taylor, who was teaching school there. When she returned to Colorado where she had been raised, Owen followed and they were married in April 1915.

He homesteaded 320 acres in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, then another 320 additional acres for a total of 640 acres. They raised cattle and sheep and also sold hay. They sold the ranch in 1958 and retired to Grand Junction, Colorado where they lived the remainder of their lives.
